Digitisation

Digitisation: Preserving the past for the future

We have provided commercial digitisation and microfilming services for over 20 years. Our present team of experienced archival photographers work from a dedicated darkroom facility on-site at The Hive. Using state-of-the-art photographic equipment, the team produce high-quality digital copies of traditional materials including historical maps, books, photographic prints, and also analogue forms including 35mm film, slides, and magnetic tape.

Our experienced and highly-skilled staff provide a bespoke service to both individuals and institutions all around the world. We work with academics and individual researchers to produce high-quality images from our own collections, as well as institutions requiring a more long-term solution to their digitisation needs.

Thanks to our online digital download service, digital copies are delivered immediately, and we can also provide your material in various formats on optical disc media, memory sticks, or external hard drives.

Client materials are held in our PD 5454:2012-standard environmentally-controlled strong-rooms whilst in our care, and all our staff have a detailed understanding of the needs of archival materials. Our equipment is state of the art; we use Mamiya 645 medium format cameras fitted with PhaseOne IQ180, P40 digital capture backs, and Schneider and Zeiss lenses. Copies are produced in-line with current best practice for archival photography and metadata standards.

Clients who have used our digitisation service include the University of Birmingham, Elgar Birthplace Museum, Warwickshire HER Services, Shropshire Archives, Leicestershire HER Service, Worcester Cathedral Library, English Heritage, and The National Trust.

“We commissioned Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service to digitise our Historic Environment Record Aerial Photograph Collection amounting to around 18,000 images. We have been immensely pleased with the service we have received, not only are the images produced of very high quality but the friendliness and flexibility by the digitising team have made it a pleasure to do business with them. We have been particularly impressed by their ability to record additional data associated with our images not to mention the best price compared to any other archive digitising service out there. I have no hesitation in whole heartedly recommending them for any digitising work of this nature.” Ben Wallace, Historic Environment Record Manager, Warwickshire County Council.

Microfilming Services

We are one of the few organisations to offer a microfilming service. We use a Congress II microfilming camera producing approximately 700 high-definition black and white images on a 30m roll of 35mm high-contrast microfilm. We use the services of a microfilm processing bureau to produce one master negative microfilm and one positive working copy, but further positive copies can be made from the negative master as required.

The microfilm camera is mounted at right angles above a pneumatically-controlled platform which supports a soft cradle to cater for various sizes and types of materials. It can be moved on its supportive column to get the best result.

We have in recent years microfilmed material for a variety of clients including Dudley Archives Service, Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service, Herefordshire Record Office, Worcester Cathedral Library, and the library services at Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Councils.
